Healthcare providers classify warts by their appearance, the HPV strain responsible for the wart, and where they frequently appear. Here is a list of the most common types of warts and what to look for:
- Common warts: Common warts, or verruca vulgaris, typically appear on your hands. They can feel like hard or rough bumps and have black dots similar to seeds. They can be the size of a pinhead or a pea.
- Flat warts: Flat warts can appear anywhere on your body. They tend to be on the smaller side and smoother than other warts. Typically, they grow in large numbers, 20 to 100 at a time.
- Plantar warts: Plantar warts appear most often on your feet. They typically look flat with black dots. They can grow significantly large and cause pain when you stand and walk.
